When Ferruccio Lamborghini first entered the car business, his goal was fairly straightforward: build grand touring machines that could rival Ferrari in performance while offering more comfort for everyday driving. That sensible approach didn’t last long. Within a few years the company created bold, dramatic machines such as the Lamborghini Miura and the Lamborghini Countach—cars that pushed design and engineering into thrilling, sometimes outrageous territory. Lamborghini has always embraced a bit of madness, and few vehicles demonstrate that better than the remarkable Lamborghini LM002.
One example has recently appeared for sale on Bring a Trailer. The truck is a 1990 model and one of only 60 built to U.S. specification during the LM002’s final production run. Located in San Diego, the vehicle also carries a service history that collectors will appreciate. Maintenance has been performed by Canepa Motorsports, a well-known specialist recognized for working on rare and high-performance automobiles.
The LM002 isn’t a vehicle that blends into traffic. Its wide stance, squared-off body, and almost military-style presence make it instantly recognizable. Beauty is subjective, of course, but the design has a certain rugged charisma. Beneath that angular exterior sits a 5.2-liter V-12 engine paired with a five-speed manual transmission, giving the truck a soundtrack more commonly associated with Italian supercars than off-road machines.
The path to the LM002 wasn’t straightforward. Lamborghini experimented with two earlier prototypes powered by American V-8 engines. The first concept, called the Cheetah, was followed by the LM001. Both used a mid-engine layout, but engineers soon discovered that the configuration created serious balance issues, especially in demanding off-road conditions.
For the production model, Lamborghini switched to a traditional front-engine design. The company also added luxury features aimed at wealthy civilian buyers rather than strictly industrial customers. Air conditioning, leather seats, and special tires designed for sand driving made the LM002 surprisingly comfortable for a vehicle with such aggressive intentions. Unsurprisingly, it found buyers among oil company executives and members of Middle Eastern royalty.
Production numbers remained low throughout its life. Just over 300 units were built in total, with the final 60 produced to meet U.S. regulations. Those versions received small updates including 17-inch OZ alloy wheels and subtle trim differences. The example currently listed shows roughly 17,000 miles, and importantly, its Pirelli Scorpion tires are only about five years old—something worth noting because low-mileage collector vehicles often sit on aging rubber.
According to the listing, the truck has also received substantial recent maintenance. In 2019 the owner reportedly spent about $32,000 at Canepa Motorsports for service and inspection. More recently, the suspension was refreshed by a European-car specialist in the San Diego area, suggesting the vehicle has been carefully maintained rather than simply stored away.
Under the hood, the LM002’s V-12 produces around 444 horsepower. Power reaches all four wheels through a two-speed transfer case, supported by three locking differentials that provide impressive traction in difficult terrain. While the truck is genuinely capable off-road, its appeal goes beyond capability alone.
Driving or owning an LM002 is really about the experience. It’s loud, oversized, and unapologetically dramatic—more a statement piece than a practical utility vehicle. In that sense, it almost feels like owning something exotic and slightly wild, a machine that draws attention wherever it appears.
Compared with today’s Lamborghini Urus, which is refined and produced in large numbers, the LM002 represents a very different chapter in Lamborghini history. It’s rarer, stranger, and arguably far more memorable—a true relic from an era when the brand wasn’t afraid to build something completely outrageous.
